मुंबई भेटीवर आलेल्या ड्यूक ऑफ एडिनबर्ग प्रिन्स एडवर्ड यांनी रविवारी (दि. २) राज्यपाल सी पी राधाकृष्णन यांची भेट घेतली. आपल्या औपचारिक भेटीनंतर एडवर्ड यांनी राजभवनातील ब्रिटिशकालीन ऐतिहासिक वारसा वास्तूंना भेट दिली. राणी एलिझाबेथ द्वितीय व ड्यूक ऑफ एडिनबर्ग प्रिन्स फिलिप यांचे सर्वात धाकटे सुपुत्र तसेच राजे चार्ल्स तृतीय यांचे धाकटे बंधू असलेल्या प्रिन्स एडवर्ड यांनी सुरुवातीला राजभवनातील पूर्वी जमिनीखाली तोपखाना असलेल्या हिरवळीची पाहणी केली. याच हिरवळीवर एडवर्ड यांचे ज्येष्ठ बंधू प्रिन्स ऑफ वेल्स चार्ल्स यांच्या सन्मानार्थ सन १९८० साली चहापान झाले होते.त्यानंतर एडवर्ड यांनी ‘जल लक्षण’ या राष्ट्रपती व पंतप्रधान यांचेसाठी राखीव राखीव असलेल्या अतिथिगृहाला भेट दिली.
या अतिथीगृहात सन १९६१ साली राणी एलिझाबेथ व त्यांचे पती ड्यूक ऑफ एडिनबर्ग प्रिन्स फिलिप यांचा राष्ट्रीय अतिथी या नात्याने मुक्काम होता. राज्यपालांचे सचिव प्रविण दराडे व जनसंपर्क अधिकारी उमेश काशीकर यांनी त्यानंतर एडवर्ड यांना ‘जल किरण’ अतिथीगृह, ‘जल विहार’ हे ऐतिहासिक सभागृह तसेच ब्रिटिश कालीन बंकर दाखवले. यावेळी ब्रिटनचे उप-उच्चायुक्त हरजिंदर कांग, ड्यूक यांचे खाजगी सचिव अॅलेक्स पॉट्स आणि राजकीय व द्विपक्षीय व्यवहार विभागप्रमुख जॉन निकेल हे देखील उपस्थित होते.राजभवनातील अधिकाऱ्यांचे आभार मानून प्रिन्स एडवर्ड पुढील कार्यक्रमासाठी रवाना झाले. स्वातंत्र्यपूर्व काळात राजभवन येथे असलेले ‘गव्हर्मेंट हाऊस’ स्वातंत्र्यानंतर मुंबई राज्याचे व राज्य निर्मितीनंतर महाराष्ट्राचे राजभवन झाले.
Duke of Edinburgh enjoys tour of Raj Bhavan
During his visit to Mumbai, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, met with Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday (2nd). Following the formal meeting, Prince Edward was shown some of the historically resonant sites in Raj Bhavan.Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,and the youngest sibling of King Charles III, started the visit with the Raj Bhavan lawn, which overlooks the sea.The Prince was informed that the lawn was the venue for the reception hosted in honour of then Prince of Wales, his brother Charles in the year 1980.Prince Edward later visited the ‘Jal Lakshan’ a VIP guest house usually reserved for the President and Prime Minister of India. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh had been invited to stay at this guest house during their visit to Mumbai in 1961.Governor’s Principal Secretary Pravin Darade and Public Relations Officer Umesh Kashikar then guided Prince Edward through the historic ‘Jal Kiran’ guest house and the ‘Jal Vihar’ state banquet hall.The Prince was also shown the historic ‘Jal Vihar’ – the State Banquet Hall and the underground bunker.The Duke was accompanied by the British Deputy High Commissioner Harjinder Kang, the Duke’s Private Secretary Alex Potts, and the Head of the Political and Bilateral Affairs Department, John Nickell.Prince Edward proceeded to his next engagement after thanking the officials.*Background*During the pre-independence period, Raj Bhavan was known as the ‘Government House’ of Bombay. After independence, it became the official residence of the Governor of the Bombay State, and following the formation of Maharashtra, it was designated as the Raj Bhavan of Maharashtra.
